What’s it like working with a dietitian?

We know meeting with a dietitian can be daunting. But even though the word diet is right there in our job title, we can assure you that we are not the food police. You’ll never be asked to step on a scale, or be judged for your size, eating habits, or exercise behaviors. When you work with us, the diet starts… never.

Our approach is rooted in the principles of Health at Every Size™ and we are committed to honoring this size affirming approach to health. We serve people of all sizes, genders, and races, and believe whatever you’re struggling with, whether it be a new medical diagnosis or mental illness, it’s not your fault.

We’re not here to pathologize your existence, but instead, here to help you navigate the world bravely and with resilience. We’'ll work together to build lifelong skills to foster a positive relationship with food, movement, and your body. Yes, even while managing a complex medical condition. Body Image coaching

Bringing our body image struggles to the forefront is an essential part of our healing process. We utilize a variety of modalities to support you in forming new narratives to feel more at home in your body. And while the stories we tell ourselves are an integral part of the body image healing puzzle; we know it’s not the whole picture. We don’t shy away from conversations around weight stigma, gender, disability, and race, as we know our intersecting identities and unique lived experiences all play a part in how we experience our bodies.

movement + exercise

Whether you’re looking to redefine your relationship with exercise in our group coaching programs, or do some practical work one-on-one with a size affirming personal trainer, we have you covered. Our Personal Training services are designed to support you in feeling grounded, embodied, and confident with the exercises performed while working towards your unique goals. Personal training is offered virtually and includes a custom supply of at-home workout equipment and optional take-home programming.

Our Coaching Approach

Curiosity

The Initial Assessment; like a first date where you get to chat about all of your medical and mental health history and it’s totally not weird! In all seriousness, the first session (and often the next few) are a chance for you and me to get curious about your health history, your lifestyle, ask each other questions, and determine how we can best support you. You’ll continue to foster your curiosity with worksheets and journaling prompts in our private Resource Library, just for clients.

Cultivation

Through our work together you’ll gain insight and awareness into your thoughts and behaviors and practice cultivating new skills to foster a positive relationship with food, movement, and your body. We do all of this while taking into account your overall readiness for change, your medical or mental health conditions, and overall access to resources.

Collaboration

Nobody knows you and your body better than you. In the following sessions we’ll work in partnership to set realistic and actionable goals that feel both manageable and aligned with your values. We also collaborate with your treatment team or ancillary providers (PCP, therapist, psychiatrist, etc) and advocate on your behalf to ensure treatment goals are free from weight stigma and affirm your intersecting identities and lived experiences.

Connection

We’ve found that clients are most successful with a variety of supports in place. While one-on-one sessions make up the bulk of our time together, you’ll have the option to stay connected in-between sessions via our COACHING+ Program. This includes messaging with your provider between sessions and monthly group check-ins.

I first reached out to Jessi a year and a half ago with the intention of working with a nutritionist to lose weight. From first impressions, Jessi’s background particularly appealed to me for its anti-restrictive, open-minded feel. Since then, I’ve realized more about myself and the world than I could’ve imagined. Working with Jessi feels relaxed, comfortable, and free of judgment. She teaches you the skills necessary to make the best choices for YOUR body. She challenges you to question and analyze the arbitrary rules society teaches you surrounding food and exercise. She provides you with books, podcasts, and articles that broaden your understanding of how diet culture creates far more harm than success stories. She liberates you from the restrictions society places on your body and your mind while providing you with the space to rebuild trust between your body and your mind. Working with Jessi has taught me lifelong lessons about what brings me peace, energy, and freedom in the choices I make for my body.
